Picture Magic is Closing After 23 Years

Picture Magic at 113 Danbury Road opened on August 14, 1989, in a very different Ridgefield. We faced Caldor and Genovese Drugs, there was a Fotomat across the parking lot - Pella windows was next door as was Guiciolli Television repair. Our shopping plaza, Copps Hill Common had a green texture 111 facade and now has a contemporary stucco finish.

When we opened there was one other dedicated photolab in Ridgefield, “One Hour Photo” which closed several years ago. In the late 1990s there were 5 labs in the Ridgefield area as well as several labs in Danbury and Wilton etc., pretty much, in Ridgefield, we’re the last one.

Over the past 23 years we’ve seen more changes than most us can comprehend, the economy, housing prices and social changes - but the most lasting changes seem to have been in technology. There were no e-mails, cell phones or digital cameras when we opened and barely anyone had ever heard of or had seen a Macintosh computer, no iPods or IPhones in 1989. Nobody printed pictures at home and after the holidays we had lines out the door of cutomers anxiously waiting to see their ‘future’ memories. In 2002 we installed a state of art digital photo lab printer - enabling us to give 10 more years of service to the town, but, time does move forward.

So, after thousands and thousands of prints, enlargements, posters and the like, we will be shutting down this summer. We’ve had the privilege of seeing so many families grow - the births of their children, new (and old) pets, graduations, engagements, vacations and marriages, and then see that cycle repeat.

Over the past 2+ decades we’ve done hundreds of family and business portraits, if you or someone you know had a portrait done by us, please come by and pick up the negatives for your future generations.

It has been indeed our honor to serve so many of the wonderful residents of Ridgefield, to create permanent memories for families and individuals to leave for the future. When I think of closing, I think of how Donna will miss the customers she calls friends, children dropping by to say hello to Shackleton, the happiness of customers who had their pictures recovered from a ‘crashed’ photo chip or the look on their face at looking at better than expected prints.

We will be ending our photo processing on July 12, but will continue our digital services (photo books, retouching, fine art printing etc.) until we shut the retail store later this summer. Our hours will be Tuesday - Thursday from 10 to 5 pm and we will reachable at 203-438-5655 or on the web at picturemagic.net.

Thank all of you for providing us with so many good memories.

Jeff Babitz, Donna Darnell and Shackleton
